The New Earth – an opera about famine in the Ukraine - will be heard only once

After 78 years, Alois Hába´s opera The New Earth will finally have its premiere. In spite of the considerable efforts of this pioneer of micro-interval music in the late 1930´s, the staging of this opera was never completed. But on December 12, 2014, it can be heard for first time ever under the musical direction of Artistic Director of the Opera Petra Kofroň. The National Theatre will present this semi-staged opera for only one performance as a contribution to the Year of Czech music.

José Cura as Otello at the State Opera

One of the most sought after contemporary tenors will perform in a production of the State Opera for the first time. José Cura accepted the offer from the director of the National Theatre Jan Burian and director of the National Theatre Opera and the State Opera Silvie Hroncová to perform the title role of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Otello on Thursday, January 29 and Tuesday, February 24, 2015. The opera will be conducted by Music Director of the State Opera Martina Leginus. In the first cast, the role of Desdemona will be sung by Eva Hornyáková and Jago by Dalibor Jenis. Pavla Vykopalová and Ivan Kusnjer will take over these roles in the following performance in February.

Salome at State Opera with Gun-Brit Barkmin

One of today´s most progressive European directors Mariusz Treliński will present his production of Salome after seven weeks of intensive rehearsals at the State Opera. The music and libretto of the opera by Richard Strauss will be prepared by German composer and conductor Heiko Mathias Förster. After premieres on 23 and 26 October 2014 at 8 p.m. each evening, the spectacle will be presented to the Prague audiences another three times during the year that marks 150 years since the birth of the composer.
