Vertigo

The Czech National Ballet is preparing a new production, this time borne in the spirit of contemporary dance. A mixed bill will present the essence of works by three distinguished and singular contemporary European dance-theatre creators: Moldova’s Radu Poklitaru, Italy’s Mauro Bigonzetti and Sweden’s Alexander Ekman. The three sharply contrasting poetics of the three artists and their opuses form a magical combination of lyricism, nostalgia, humour and crazy absurdity. Warning! This exciting combination may give rise to VERTIGO!

This season’s highlight: Strauss’ Elektra at the State Opera in Prague

The State Opera presents a new production of Richard Strauss’ opera Elektra – under the baton of maestro Roland Boer and directed by the renowned British director Keith Warner. The main character is created by famous British soprano Susan Bullock who made her debut in this role with a great success at the Metropolitan Opera. Extraordinary aspect of this production is higlighted by international cast: the role of Clytemnestra will be sung by prominent English singer Rosalind Plowright, Chrysothemis is sung by soprano Anna Gabler, Aigistha by tenor Richard Berkeley-Steele and Orestes by Miguelangelo Cavalcanti. The author of the set design is the notable Slovak stage designer Boris Kudlička who presented artistic conception of Strauss’ Salome in the State Opera a year ago. The gala premiere is scheduled for June 10, 2016.

Andrea Chénier returns to the National Theatre in Prague after 119 years

The opera Andrea Chénier by Italian composer Umberto Giordano premieres at the National Theatre in Prague on 5 and 6 May 2016. The work about a poet of the age of the French Revolution with its thrilling music, dramatic and tense emotionality belongs to the masterpieces of the Italian verismo operas. The National Theatre Orchestra will play it under the baton of artistic director of the Opera Petr Kofroň. The director is be Michal Dočekal. The main roles will be alternated by Hector Sandoval / Rafael Alvarez (Andrea Chénier), Svatopluk Sem / Roman Janál (Carlo Gérard) and Anda-Louise Bogza / Petra Šimková-Alvarez (Maddalena from Coigny).

Madama Butterfly returns to the State Opera in Prague

One of the most impressive works of the world opera returns to the State Opera in Prague after more than one year lasting break. Puccini's Madama Butterfly is staged by the State Opera music director Martin Leginus and directed by Jiří Heřman and premieres on 4 and 9 February 2016. The title role of Cio-Cio-San will be performed by Maria Kobielska or Christina Vasileva, the role of Pinkerton will be sung by Peter Berger or Luciano Mastro.

Rossini´s La Cenerentola at the Estates Theatre

After Bellini's Norma The National Theatre introduces another bel canto masterpiece. Rossini's La Cenerentola, musically prepared by Jan Kučera, directed by Hungarian director Enikő Eszenyi and set design by Kentaur premieres on 21 and 22 January 2016. Starring as Angelina is Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Lena Belkina and successful Czech singer, primarily engaged in Austria and Germany Kateřina Hebelková. In the role of Don Ramiro the audience will enjoy soloist of the National Theatre Martin Šrejma and also Greek tenor Vassilis Kavayas.

Lost Objects

Lost Objects is a musical exploration of the meaning of memory. With the spine of a baroque oratorio layered with the muscle of modern times, it is a powerful monument to the loss of people, things, rituals, ideas. The piece was written by American composers and founders of the New York-based organisation Bang on a Can Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe. It was originally intended for the baroque virtuosity of the legendary Concerto Köln orchestra. In a slightly altered and authorised version the work will premiere 17 December 2015 at The New Stage in Prague under the batton of Artistic director of Opera Petr Kofron.
