On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Zemlinsky , a composer, conductor and pedagogue, a music festival will be held on October 8-10, 2021 in his honor. Four chamber concerts will take place as part of the festival, featuring compositions by Zemlinsky and his contemporaries and composers who were personally close to him. The festival will finish with a concert at the State Opera on October 10, where a fragment from the opera Malva, which was orchestrated by musicologist Antony Beaumont, will be presented in its world premiere. The Zemlinsky Quartet, the Choir and Orchestra of the State Opera, opera soloists and foreign guests Johanni van Oostrum, Michael Nagy and cellist Claudio Bohorquez will perform.
About the concert
Alexander Zemlinsky, the conductor, composer, teacher and music director worked at the New German Theatre from 1911 to 1927, and led the house to international success. He expanded the repertoire and premiered numerous works, including his own compositions, but also for examle Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung, whic will also have a new premiere at the State Opera in November 2021. Also music by Ernst Krenek, Paul Hindemith, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Franz Schreker was performed under his aegis. He succeeded in bringing great artists to Prague, including Maria Hussa, Paul Pella, Friedrich Schorr, Leo Slezak, Richard Tauber and Lotte Lehmann. In 1933, Zemlinky fled from Berlin, first to Vienna and then to the USA in 1938.
This concert celebrates purely Zemlinsky and his music. Next to his famous Lyric Symphony two smaller, less known pieces for choir and orchestra will be played. At the heart of the concert is the never completed opera Malva. For the very first time his opera fragment Malva will be performed, specially orchestrated for Musica non grata by Antony Beaumont. The libretto is based on Maxim Gorky's book of the same name "Malva".
