LATERNA FEST
Introduction and programme

Constellation of the flesh is a VR experience inspired by Buryat shamans going into trance.

About

Constellation of the flesh is a VR experience inspired by Buryat shamans going into trance. Based on a real event in a sacred place between Mongolia, Siberia and China, where a rare meeting of shamans took place at the end of the summer of 2019. The project is a simulation of a performance, a supernatural dance experience, of visual documentary and rendered worlds. It opens a discursive space that provides new visibility to the old, supposedly irrational belief system and the alternative views of the world inherent in shamanism. The starting point lies with the constantly marginalised Buryat people who nomadically dwell mainly in Siberia and other parts of Russia, in Mongolia, Manchuria and Central Asia, crossing countries and borders.

The project focuses on the choreographic expression of trance in shamanist movements. Can we digitise the dance of the supernatural? Can we transform those trance fragments into a sensory experience? How can the body transcend beyond physical boundaries?
