Ballet Preparatory School

Dear friends,

At the outset of our 67th season, I would like to sum up briefly the previous one. In line with our splendid tradition, we gave a successful annual performance, titled Proměny (Transformations), which was accompanied by the launch of a brochure recapitulating the past and present of the National Theatre Ballet Preparatory School, furnished with Czech and English texts. It is the very first comprehensive publication of the type, providing ample facts and photographs, as well as professional biographies of the ballet stars who as children were nurtured at our school. The booklet is available for purchase at the National Theatre box office at the New Stage.

Last year, a number of our pupils passed admission examinations and enrolled at the Prague Dance Conservatory, while some others are currently attending the Brno Dance Conservatory, the Prague Dance Centre, the International Conservatory of Prague, and other prestigious schools.

In the 2019/2020 season, our pupils will continue to appear in the Czech National Ballet productions of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker – A Christmas Carol. They will also perform in Petr Zuska’s choreography A Bouquet, created for the Prague Chamber Ballet. Moreover, we will collaborate with Zuska within the upcoming premiere of the National Theatre Opera adaptation of Bohuslav Martinů’s choral ballet The Chap-Book. In all likelihood, our children will appear in the new production of The Sleeping Beauty, which will receive its Czech premiere.
I hope that our pupils and teachers will accomplish all their tasks with aplomb, as they always have.

The Sleeping Beauty: Fairy-tale ballet by Márica Haydée

It was great joy for the Ballet Preparatory School to take part in preparing this spectacular ballet. Children really got the opportunity to dance. We could see them as squires, little Auroras, Waltz dancers and gnomes. The online premiere of the production will take place on April 29, 2021 on the official YouTube channel of The Czech National Ballet.
Hopefully you will see us soon live in the theatre.

The Nutcracker – A Christmas Carol Live on ČT art

For every one of us the live broadcasting of The Nutcracker – A Christmas Carol from the National Theatre on December 21 was exhilarating. The children were amazing.

We are happy we can meet with you, our dear audience, at least this way, in these troubled times.

      The Ballet Preparatory School Miniatures

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the 2019/2020 season we were forced to cancel this performance – for the first time in our nearly ten-year history. To compensate at least partially for this necessary measure we introduced a modified version of the production on October 4, 2020 in the Estates Theatre. In the second part of the evening students of the Prague Dance Conservatory appeared on stage as well. Under the title Miniatures the Ballet Preparatory School introduced selected works from older performances. I have no doubt that in these difficult times we managed to produce a miracle! At least the teachers saw it that way and judging from the reactions of children and parents the joy was shared by all of us. The special moments we experienced together are documented by many photographs from the stage as well as backstage.

        A guest from South Korea

On 4 October 2019, the National Theatre Ballet Preparatory School welcomed a representative of the Korean National Ballet Academy. We showed our dear guest the premises we work in and, during the fifth and sixth grade classes, shared with her our teaching experience. The visit confirmed that notwithstanding the thousands of kilometres separating the Czech Republic and South Korea the ballet art connects us, as the dance language is understood by everyone worldwide.

        Publication Ballet Preparatory School 1835 – 2019

For the very first time in its history, the National Theatre Ballet Preparatory School has issued a comprehensive publication informing the readers about its past, including major figures and distinguished educators. It gives a brief account of the repertoire and annual performances that have featured our pupils. The booklet also contains short professional biographies of the ballet stars who launched their careers as little children at our school.
We believe that ballet lovers will find our publication an engrossing read

The National Theatre Ballet Preparatory School pupils in Swan Lake

The Czech National Ballet presented in Czech premiere the globally celebrated choreographer John Cranko’s adaptation of P. I. Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. We are delighted that the National Theatre Ballet Preparatory School pupils appear in the splendid production.

The National Theatre Ballet Preparatory School pupils in A Bouquet

Our pupils have been afforded the opportunity to perform in the Prague Chamber Ballet production A Bouquet, directed and choreographed by Petr Zuska.
