The Estates Theatre, constructed in the Classicist style, is recognized as one of Europe's most beautiful historic theatres. It was commissioned by the enlightened nobleman Count Franz Anton von Nostitz-Rieneck. Construction was completed in under two years, and the theatre officially opened in 1783 with Lessing’s tragedy, Emilia Galotti. Alongside the theatre in Leoben, Styria, it is one of the few remaining venues of its kind in Europe that have been preserved in nearly original condition. Notable individuals associated with the theatre include Czech theatrical pioneers the Thám brothers, V. K. Klicpera, J. K. Tyl, F. Škroup, C. M. von Weber, N. Paganini, and G. Mahler. Since 1920, the Estates Theatre has been part of the National Theatre organization.
