Biography

A soloist of the National Theatre in Prague, the Czech bass Pavel Švingr made his debut at the State Opera in 2009 as the Waiter and the Boatman in a production of Britten’s Death in Venice, and at the National Theatre in 2012 as Junketberry and Chief Cockatrice in the world premiere of Marko Ivanović's opera Enchantia.

He studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (in the class of Ivan Kusnjer) and at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. At the National Theatre in Prague, he has performed Bertrand (Tchaikovsky: Iolanta), Mozart's Masetto and Leporello (Don Giovanni), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Alidoro (Rossini: Cinderella), the Majordomo and Mathieu (Giordano: Andrea Chénier), Zuniga (Bizet: Carmen), the King (Verdi: Aida), Filip (Dvořák: The Jacobin), Angelotti (Puccini: Tosca), Cesare Salzapariglia (Donizetti: Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali), Yedinitsyn (Shostakovich: Antiformalist Rayok), and other characters. His repertoire also includes Sarastro (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), the Water Goblin (Dvořák: Rusalka) and the Hermit (Weber: Der Freischütz). Moreover, he has appeared at regional opera houses – the North Bohemia Theatre in Ústí nad Labem, the South Bohemia Theatre in České Budějovice and the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň. In 2013, he guested at the Zomeropera Alden Biesen festival in Belgium. A sought-after concert artist too, he has performed Dvořák's Biblical Songs and Stabat Mater, Mozart's Requiem and Jan Hanuš’s song cycle Wooden Christ.

He has received numerous accolades at Czech and international competitions, including first prize at the Bohuslav Martinů Competition in Prague, second prize in the Junior Male category at the Antonín Dvořák International Vocal Competition in Karlovy Vary and first prize at the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg international vocal competition in Berlin.
