The Neo-Renaissance building of the State Opera was built as the New German Theatre by the Prague German community in 1888. With its stage parameters and auditorium capacity, it is the most generous theatre space in Prague. After a four-year demanding reconstruction, its operation was renewed by a gala concert at the beginning of 2020.
The most famous personalities in music history are firmly linked with the State Opera, such as the famous composers Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss or Alois Hába, the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso or the world-famous Czechoslovak opera singers Edita Gruberová and Gabriela Beňačková.
The tour of the State Opera takes about sixty minutes. We shall start in the entrance foyer where you can see the terrazzo, the historic box office and ceiling richly with stuccoes. The tour continues to the auditorium with brand new seats equipped with LED panels; you can admire the extraordinary decoration of the auditorium ceiling, a replica of the “lost” Veith curtain by Martin Černý, as well as a lobby adorned with busts of R. Wagner, B. Smetana and L. Janáček. The tour ends in the lounge of Angel Neumann - the first director of the theatre.
