Biography
Guest of the National Theatre Opera.
Wolf Matthias Friedrich studied singing at the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy University of Music and Drama in Leipzig under the tutelage of Professor Eva Schubert. In 1980 he won the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary. Between 1982 and 1986 he was a member of Dresden’s Staatsoper. He has sung the most distinct baroque and classical opera roles on a host of European opera stages. He performed at Schwetzinger Festspiele (Haydn: Armida, Legrenzi: La Divisione del Mondo) and Musikfestspiele in Potsdam (Händel: Acis and Galatea), etc. He sang twice at the Händel Festival in Halle (Händel: Deidamia) conducted by Alessandro De Marchi and directed by Nicholas Broadhurst. He has collaborated with a number of leading conductors – Kurt Masur, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Fabio Luisi, Howard Arman, Daniel Reuss, Michel Corboz, Konrad Junghänel. He has performed on concert stages at many celebrated European festivals, appeared several times as a guest in Israel, and made several radio and CD recordings. He has also devoted to the song repertory. Other projects he has featured in include, for example, concerts in Sydney (conducted by Paul Dyer) and Kuala Lumpur, the title role in the concert version of The Flying Dutchman conducted by David Timm in Leipzig, several world premieres of works by contemporary composers (U. Zimmermann, Shih, H. G. Pflüger, W. M. Danner, etc.). Wolf Matthias Friedrich is also the co-founder of the Kerll-Rosenmüller-Fest devoted to the composers J. C. Kerrl, J. Rosenmüller and S. Knüpfer.
