Werner Sauer

Biography

Werner Sauer studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg with Prof. Götz Friedrich. He received his diploma in opera direction in 1989. From 1989 to 1992 he was dramaturge of the Chamber Opera in Berlin. Since 1992 he has been assistant director at the Comic Opera Berlin under the direction of Harry Kupfer, Andreas Homoki and Barrie Kosky. He has independently taken various Comic Opera productions to theatres and festivals in cities such as Nuremberg, Antwerp, Brussels, Milan, Genoa, Naples, Tokyo, Graz, Granada Festival. In 2002, he was a lecturer in stage teaching at the University of the Arts with a stage evening. He was assistant to director Willy Decker for the Vienna State Opera's productions of Jenůfa, Albert Herring, Moses and Aaron. In 2006 he co-directed the production of Der Rosenkavalier (directed by Andreas Homoki) at the Comic Opera Berlin. In 2008 he staged (direction and set) Carmen at the Theater für Niedersachsen. Since 2009 he has been the director of the Opera Studio, which regularly stages small projects. From 2012-2016 he was production manager of the Comic Opera Berlin under the direction of Barrie Kosky. Since 2016 he has been the chief assistant director of the Comic Opera Berlin. From 2017-2021 he led the revivals of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (directed by B. Kosky) at the Bayreuth Festival. In 2020 he led a masterclass for chorus direction in Taiwan.
