A multi award winning British choreographer and director, founder of Company Wayne McGregor (previously Random Dance) and Studio Wayne McGregor, a resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet London.
Born in Stockport, McGregor graduated from Breton Hall College at University of Leeds and José Limón School in New York. In 1993 he founded his first dance company Random Dance, known as Company Wayne McGregor nowadays, that is a resident company at Sadler’s Wells theatre in London. In 2006 he was named a resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet London, from 2021 he will be the Director of Dance for the Venice Biennale until 2024.
His is regularly commissioned by and has works in the repertories of the most important ballet companies in the world, including Paris Opera Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, New York City Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, NDT 1, Australian Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Bayerisches Staatsballett and San Francisco Ballet.
His most celebrated works include Chroma (2006), Infra (2008), Borderlands (2013), Atomos (2013), Woolf Works (2015), Autobiography (2017) or AfteRite (2018).
McGregor is in demand as a choreographer for theatre, film or pop music and fashion industry. He worked with Teatro alla Scala or English National Opera, he collaborated on films such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Legend of Tarzan, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them 1 & 2, Sing, Mary Queen of Scots, various music videos and fashion campaighs.
His work has earned him a multitude of awards including four Critics' Circle National Dance Awards, two Time Out Awards, two South Bank Show Awards, two Olivier Awards, a prix Benois de la Danse and two Golden Mask Awards. In 2011 McGregor was awarded a CBE for Services to Dance and in 2021 was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Prix de Lausanne.
His creative team includes light designer Lucy Carter, dramaturgist Uzma Hameed and composers such as Max Richer, Olafur Eliasson, John Pawson, Jon Hopkins or Jlin.
McGregor is very curious about movement and its creative potentials, his experiments have led him into collaborative dialogue with an array of artistic forms, scientific disciplines, and technological interventions. In 2017 he founded Studio Wayne McGregor, a creative nexus that pushes the frontiers of physical intelligence through dance, design and technology.
Wayne McGregor is Professor of Choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, has Honorary Doctorates from Plymouth University, University of Leeds, University of Chester, and UAL and is part of the Circle of Cultural Fellows at King’s College London.
