Armenian-German bass Vazgen Gazaryan will make his debut at the National Theatre Opera and the State Opera Prague in the 2025/26 season, performing the title role in Mefistofele. His most recent and upcoming guest engagements include the Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlo) at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Zaccaria (Nabucco) and Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) at the Israeli Opera, Padre Guardiano (La forza del destino) at Opéra National de Montpellier and Opéra de Toulon, Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at Opéra de Lille, Phorbas (Œdipe) at the Bregenz Festival, Zaccaria at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra) at Opera North, and Daland (Der fliegende Holländer) at Ópera de Tenerife. His previous projects include Oroveso (Norma) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Vodník (Rusalka) at Opéra de Nice and Ópera de Tenerife, Daland and the title role in Don Pasquale at Teatro Municipal de Santiago (Chile), Arkel (Pelléas et Mélisande) at the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the High Priest (Œdipe) at Komische Oper Berlin, Philip II (Don Carlos) at Konzerttheater Bern, the Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlos) at Theater Basel, and King Dodon (Le Coq d’or) at Theater Magdeburg. As a member of Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, his roles included Méphistophélès (Faust), the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), the Hermit (Der Freischütz), Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Crespel (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), and Arkel (Pelléas et Mélisande). He has also appeared at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, Barbican Hall in London, the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Nationaltheater Mannheim, and Theater Würzburg. From 2007 to 2017, he was a member of Theater Erfurt, where he appeared in the title role of Boito’s Mefistofele, as Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust, Leporello and the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, and the Doctor in Wozzeck. Vazgen Gazaryan studied voice and percussion at the Yerevan State Conservatory and began his career at the Yerevan Opera Studio.
