Biography

Takeda Takashi (*1954, Tokyo) is a master of Noh theatre of the Hōshō school and a leading shite performer. He comes from a Noh acting family; his father was the Noh actor Takeda Yoshinari. He studied the art of Noh under his father’s guidance and later also under the 17th and 18th heads of the Hōshō school. He made his stage debut in 1960 and has been performing leading roles in the classical repertoire on a regular basis since 1973. His major roles include such celebrated plays as Dōjōji, Shakkyō, Okina, Ataka, and Sotoba Komachi. He serves in the leadership of the Hōshō school, is a designated holder of Japan’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, a member of the Nōgakukai Association, and Professor Emeritus at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
