Biography

The Slovak Philharmonic Choir (SFS) is a prominent representative of Slovakia’s professional choral art. Formed back in 1946 as the Czechoslovak Radio Mixed Choir, in the first few years it was led by its founder, the composer Ladislav Novák, who would be succeeded as chorus master by Jan Maria Dobrodinský, Štefan Klimo, Pavel Procházka, Marián Vach, Jan Rozehnal, Blanka Juhaňáková and other distinguished figures. Since 2014, the SFS has been led by Jozef Chabroň. Renowned conductors have praised its cultivated performance, the chime between the voice groups, as well as promptitude, reliability and exemplary discipline. In February 2023, the Slovak Philharmonic Choir received Germany’s Oper! Award in the Best Choir category for its performances in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, along with the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Kirill Petrenko, at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival, and within a series of concerts at the Philharmonie Berlin. The choir’s male section performed to acclaim in Igor Stravinsky’s oratorio Oedipus Rex in Switzerland. Within the Beethoven Marathon 2022, the Slovak Philharmonic Choir sang Symphony No. 9 at concerts in Germany and Serbia. During the current season, the SFS has given performances in Berlin, Stuttgart and Istanbul.
