Biography

Sergio Verde is a visual artist whose professional practice spans photography, video, and graphic design. He studied Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country, as well as photography and audiovisual design at Sheffield Hallam University. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, he received a photography grant from the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2018, he began working in the world of opera as a visual creator and video scene designer in collaboration with the stage director Barbora Horáková. He created the video installations for stage productions such as I Hate Music by Leonard Bernstein and El amor brujo by Manuel de Falla at Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao. He was also part of the artistic team responsible for the video design of Der goldene Drache by Peter Eötvös and Roland Schimmelpfennig at Semperoper Dresden. In July 2020, Tiempos de cabaret y cambalache marked his first collaboration with Calixto Bieito. That same year, he designed the video scenography for the world premiere of Dark Spring by Hans Thomalla at Nationaltheater Mannheim, as well as for Carmen at Staatsoper Hannover and Rigoletto at the National Theatre in Prague, both under the artistic direction of Barbora Horáková. In 2021, he created the video design for Erwartung at the National Theatre in Prague. In 2022, he designed the video scenography for The Bald Prima Donna by Eugène Ionesco at Semperoper Dresden. More recently, he created the video design for Thomas by Georg Friedrich Haas and Händl Klaus at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in 2023, Dark Fall at Nationaltheater Mannheim and Benvenuto Cellini at Semperoper Dresden in 2024, and The Fiery Angel at Theater Bremen in 2025.
