Biography

The German baritone Roman Trekel has established himself as one of the most sought-after singers within his domain. He received his musical education in Berlin starting his career at the Berlin State Opera and has been a principal singer of this company ever since. His repertoire includes roles such as Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Posa (Don Carlos), Count (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), Kurwenal (Tristanund Isolde), Beckmesser (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Amfortas (Parsifal), Faust (Doktor Faust) and Wozzeck (Wozzeck). He has performed with the leading opera houses throughout Europe and Japan, inter alia with the Teatro alla Scala di Milano, the Royal Opera House London, the Dresden, Hamburg and Munich State Operas, De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, the Zurich Opera House, the New National Theatre Tokyo, the Vienna State Opera (Forester in The Cunning Little Vixen, April 2016) and the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals.
Roman Trekel's intensive concert work as a lied recitalist and as soloist with the major and prestigious orchestras and conductors includes appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Sir Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann. Numerous CD and DVD recordings for different labels – CPO, Naxos, Berlin Classics, Arte Nova and Oehms Classics, Deutsche Grammophon – include CDs such as Schumann: Dichterliebe, Schubert: Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin, among many others, and DVD Tannhäuser (Wolfram) productions under Philippe Jordan (Arthus) and under Franz Welser-Möst (EMI Classics), Lohengrin (Heerrufer) with Kent Nagano conducting (Opus Arte),Le nozze di Figaro (Count Almaviva) with Daniel Barenboim (TDK) or L’elisir d’amore (Belcore) with conductor Pablo Heras-Casado and stage director Rolando Villazón (Deutsche Grammophon). The most recent opera recording is CD with Wozzeck under Hans Graf (Naxos).
