Petr Vítek

Biography

The set designer Petr Vítek will be working for the very first time with the National Theatre Opera in the 2023/24 season (Nabucco). After graduating in mathematics and informatics at the University of Hradec Králové, he enrolled at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre of the Faculty of Theatre of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he studied stage direction and dramaturgy (under the guidance of Tomáš Žižka) and, finally, set design. He has regularly collaborated with the Adam Svozil – Kristýna Kosová tandem and other drama stage directors, including Tomáš Loužný and David Drábek, as well as the independent Divadlo Letí company. He has designed sets for the Divadlo Na zábradlí in Prague, the Klicpera Theatre in Hradec Králové, the South Bohemia Theatre in České Budějovice and the Municipal Theatre in Kladno. When it comes to opera, he has created sceneries for Dominik Beneš’s productions of The Mikado (South Bohemia Theatre) and La Gioconda (Banská Bystrica), Tomáš Ondřej Pilař’s productions of Iris, L'incoronazione di Poppea, Alceste (J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň) and Mefistofele (South Bohemia Theatre). Petr Vítek’s creations are characterised by pure and poetic aesthetics, and experimentation with unconventional materials, with light being a distinct visual and expressive element. He has also worked for film and devoted to graphic design.
