Paula Klein

Biography

Paula Klein was born in Vigo, Spain, and grew up in Stuttgart. After graduating from high school, she began acting studies with John Strasberg in Paris and started her theater career as an actress in France. In 2008, she expanded her work to costume design and has since been working freelance, primarily for opera and musical productions at various European theaters. Engagements have repeatedly taken her to the Théâtre du Châtelet (including "On the Town," "Nixon in China," Stephen Sondheim's "Passion," "42nd Street," Johann Sebastian Bach's "St John Passion") and the Théâtre Marigny in Paris ("Peau d’Âne," "Funny Girl"), as well as the Paris Opera ("Der Ring des Nibelungen"). Further engagements followed at the Semperoper Dresden, the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the opera houses in Bilbao, Madrid, Geneva, Lille, Rouen, and Luxembourg. She has a close working relationship with artists such as Robert Wilson, Stephen Mear, Fanny Ardant, and Milena Canonero. Paula Klein first worked with Calixto Bieito in 2018 and, as a collaborator of costume designer Ingo Krügler, has since been involved in Bieito's productions in Bilbao, Dresden, Paris, Madrid, Zurich, and Geneva. Following her Mannheim debut in "Jakob Lenz," she designed the costumes for "Cabaret" at the Schauspiel Stuttgart in 2023. In the 2023/24 season, she worked with Bieito on "La Resurrezione" at the Schwetzingen Baroque Festival and Kurt Weill's "Der Silbersee" in Mannheim. She also designed the costumes for Erich Korngold's "Die tote Stadt" in the 2024/25 season with Bieito at the Bergen National Opera.
