Nathan Brock

Biography

Canadian conductor Nathan Brock is acclaimed for his versatility across opera, concert, and ballet. He studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Zürich, graduating in 2008, and began his professional career as Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, later serving as Resident Conductor from 2009 to 2014. During this time, he led more than 125 performances and played a central role in the orchestra’s transition to La Maison Symphonique, earning recognition for both programming and outreach initiatives.

In 2015, Brock joined the Hamburg State Opera as Kapellmeister, where he conducted a broad operatic repertoire encompassing mainstage revivals and contemporary premieres. It was during this period that he began a long-standing collaboration with choreographer John Neumeier and the Hamburg Ballet, leading productions including Anna Karenina, Eleonora Duse, Liliom, Nijinsky, Kameliendame, and Die Möwe. This partnership cemented his reputation as a conductor equally at home in symphonic, operatic, and ballet repertoire.

Since then, Brock has established strong associations with leading ballet companies around the world, including The National Ballet of Canada, the Royal Danish Ballet, and the Dutch National Ballet, and has appeared with orchestras and opera houses across Europe and North America. His engagements have included the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, Orchestre des Pays de la Loire, Danish Philharmonic, all of Canada’s major symphony orchestras, Vancouver Opera, Royal Swedish, Komische Oper Berlin, and Aalto Theater Essen, among many others.

In the 2025–26 season, Brock returns to Hamburg and will also conduct at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, with the Czech National Ballet in Prague, the Bavarian State Ballet, and with the Royal Danish and Dutch National Ballets. Upcoming engagements include debuts with the Joffrey Ballet, Vienna State Ballet, and Rome Opera Ballet, alongside returns to Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Prague, and Hamburg.

Known for his nuanced musicianship and deep understanding of both musical and theatrical demands, Brock’s repertoire spans classical and contemporary symphonic, operatic, and ballet works. His performances have been recorded for CD and DVD, as well as broadcast and streamed internationally.

In addition to his achievements as a musician, he has a strong passion for history and politics, holding a degree in History and International Relations from the University of Toronto. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, he distinguished himself by graduating at the top of his Executive MBA Class of 2021 at the Rotman School of Management, Canada’s premier business school, earning the prestigious Bregman Scholarship in recognition of his exceptional academic performance. This path has since led him to consult internationally for a diverse range of firms pursuing public listings on venture exchanges as well as his partnership in a firm managing alternative assets.
