Biography

Austrian bass-baritone Winkler was born in Bregenz and studied at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna with Walter Berry. He initially specialized in buffo roles, and sang with the ensembles of Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg State Theatre, Schwerin, Komische Oper Berlin, and Vienna Volksoper in such roles as Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola), Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Sweeney Todd, Gianni Schicci, Frank (Die Fledermaus), Caspar (Der Freischütz) and Kecal (The Bartered Bride). Winkler made his Wagner debut in 2011 singing Klingsor (Parsifal) in Tallinn. Engagements since have included Alberich (Der Ring des Nibelungen) for the Bayreuth Festival, the George Enescu Festival, the Wagner Festival, Budapest, and in Nuremburg, Klingsor for Royal Swedish Opera and in Stuttgart, Wozzeck for the George Enescu Festival, Orest (Elektra) in Warsaw, Count Waldner (Arabella) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Animal Tamer/Athlete (Lulu) for Bavarian State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera and Dr Wilhelm Reischmann (Elegy for Young Lovers) for Theater an der Wien.
