Marie Svobodová

Biography

Mezzo-soprano Marie Svobodová makes her debut at the National Theatre Opera in the role of the Second Maid in Cherubini's Medea (2025).

She studied singing in 2017-18 at the Royal Academy of Music in London and then at the Prague Conservatoire. In 2016, she attended a masterclass at the Mozarteum Academy in Salzburg under the guidance of Marjana Lipovšek, and in 2019 she attended Dagmar Pecková's performance courses at the Zlatá Pecka Music Festival. 

She has performed the roles of the Second Lady (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), Magdalena (Jirásek: Komenský) and Dorabella (Mozart: Così fan tutte) in the opera of the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice. She sang the alto part in the Czech Christmas Mass for Czech Television with the Prague Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Zdeněk Klauda and directed by Matěj Forman. Since 2014 she has regularly performed at early music concerts with conductor Tomáš Hála. At the opening of the Zlatá Pecka festival in 2021 she performed with the Hradec Králové Philharmonic under the baton of Tomáš Brauner. She has also collaborated in concert with the Epoque Quartet. She has also performed at the Litoměřice Music Festival with Tomáš Brauner and Adam Plachetka and at the Zlatá Praha Festival.

She has won several awards at singing competitions. In 2013, she won the Bohuslav Martinů Song Competition (1st place in the conservatory category) and came second in the Prague Singer competition (conservatory category). In 2016, she was awarded the second prize in the Opera Hopes category at the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary and in 2019 she won the Gustav Mahler Prize in the Song category at the same competition.
