Marcus Jupither

Biography

Swedish bass-baritone Marcus Jupither makes his debut at the National Theatre as Nekrotzar in Ligeti's opera Le Grand Macabre.

Between 2003 and 2011 he performed with great success at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm as Gérard (Giordano: Andrea Chénier), Renato (Verdi: Un ballo in maschera), Scarpia (Puccini: Tosca), Verdi's Rigoletto and Macbeth, Tomsky (Tchaikovsky: The Queen of Spades), Dr. Falke (J. Strauss: Die Fledermaus), Boris Ismailov (Shostakovich: Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk) and Orestes (Strauss: Elektra). One of his most acclaimed roles is Alberich (Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen), whom he has performed at the Opéra National de Paris, the Royal Opera in Stockholm, Den Norske Opera in Oslo, in Bergen, Karlstad and Karlsruhe, at the Latvian National Opera in Riga and the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest. He has appeared as Wotan in Wagner's Die Walküre at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg, as Barak (Strauss: Die Frau ohne Schatten) at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, as the Holländer (Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer) at the Salzburger Landestheater, and as Frank (Korngold: Die tote Stadt) or as Grigoris (Martinů: The Greek Passion) at the Wermland Opera in Karlstad.

He is the winner of the Swedish Birgit Nilsson Prize 2008.
