Biography
Dutch tenor Marcel Beekman made his Prague National Theatre debut at the State Opera in the title role of Rameau‘s Platée.
Highlights in 2024/25 include his house and role debut as Falsacappa (Offenbach: Les Brigands) at the Opéra national de Paris as well as his house debut as Don Curzio (Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro) at Staatsoper Berlin. Among recent successes are the roles of Iro (Monteverdi: Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Hauk-Šendorf (Janáček: The Makropulos Affair) at the Opéra de Lyon, Teufel in the world premiere of Lang‘s Dora at the Oper Stuttgart, Nanny (Monteverdi: L’incoronazione di Poppea) at the Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, Golo (Schumann: Genoveva) with Helsinki Baroque, Mr. Jones in the world premiere of Raskatov‘s Animal Farm at De Nationale Opera Amsterdam, Nanny (Sacrati: La finta pazza) with Cappella Mediterranea and Leonardo Garcia Alarcon (Château de Versailles), Bababeck (Offenbach: Barkouf) at the Oper Zürich, Platée at the Staatsoper Stuttgart and the four roles of Andrès, Cochenille, Frantz and Pitichinaccio in Offenbach‘s Les contes d‘ Hoffmann at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia.
He has worked with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Iván Fischer, William Christie, Frans Brüggen, Christophe Rousset, Richard Egarr, Reinhard Goebel, Daniele Gatti, Sir Mark Elder, Claus Peter Flor, Steven Sloane, Reinbert de Leeuw, Sylvain Cambreling, John Adams, Marc Albrecht, Avner Biron, Jonathan Stockhammer and Ed Spanjaard and with orchestras and ensembles including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, ASKO|Schönberg and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. Marcel Beekman has appeared at Salzburger Osterfestspiele and Salzburger Festspiele, Theater an der Wien, Opéra Comique in Paris, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse, Opéra de Dijon, Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, the Bregenzer Festspiele, Holland Festival, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall New York in productions by directors such as Robert Carsen, Pierre Audi, Barrie Kosky, Calixto Bieito, Ivo van Hove, Claus Guth, Stefan Herheim, Tatjana Gürbaca, Hal Hartley, Nicola Raab, Katie Mitchell and Krzysztof Warlikowski.
Marcel Beekman is known for his outstanding ability in avant-garde repertoire and has premiered numerous works that have been specially composed for him by Calliope Tsoupaki, Martijn Padding, Roderik de Man, Micha Hamel, Elmer Schönberger, Jacques Bank, António Chagas Rosa and Jeff Hamburg as well as Reza Namavar, Joost Kleppe, Anke Brouwer, Bart Visman and Matthias Kadar.
His extensive discography includes Theatre of the World with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (Nonesuch), nominated at the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2018 and De Nationale Opera‘s 2017 production of Berg‘s Wozzeck, staged by Krzysztof Warlikowski (Naxos). His widely celebrated performance of Platée in Robert Carsen’s acclaimed production for Theater an der Wien, conducted by William Christie, was released on DVD by Unitel in August 2021.
