Kurt Horres

Biography

Following his studies and work as a stage director’s assistant, he created the first productions of his own in Bonn and Wuppertal. He was chief stage director of the Lübeck Opera, while between 1964 and 1975 he was director of the Wuppertal Opera, stage manager of the State Theatre in Darmstadt and, later on, of the Hamburg State Opera. From there he moved to Düsseldorf’s Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where from 1986 to 1996 he was chief stage manager. Kurt Horres ranks among the leading directors of contemporary musical theatre who for years have formed the German theatre scene. He has produced works by such authors as Boris Blacher, Luigi Dallapiccolo, Paul Dessau, Werner Egk, Gottfried von Einem, Wolfgang Fortner, Hans Werner Henze, Paul Hindemith, Giselher Klebe, Darius Milhaud, Krysztof Penderecki, Aribert Reimann and Udo Zimmermann, many of the productions having been world premieres. Since the 1996/1997 theatre season Kurt Horres has worked as a freelance stage director.
