Biography

Armenian soprano Kristina Mkhitaryan made her National Theatre Opera debut in the 2020/21 season as Violetta Valéry (La traviata). She graduated from the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre in Moscow in 2004, and went on to join the Young Artist Programme at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. She has won first prize at the Queen Sonja International Competition in Oslo (2013), third prize at the Neue Stimmen Competition (2013) and second prize at the 2017 Operalia Competition. Recent operatic engagements have included Micaëla (Carmen) at her Royal Opera House, London debut (2019), Violetta (La traviata) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Palm Beach Opera, ROH Muscat, Opera di Roma in Caracalla, at Glyndebourne Opera Festival, and the Royal Opera House in London, Gilda (Rigoletto), Norina (Don Pasquale) and Amina (La Sonnambula) at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) in her Metropolitan Opera New York debut (2018). She has also sung Gilda with Opera Australia in Sydney and Hamburg State Opera, Medora (Il corsaro) at the Palau de les Arts Valencia, Eritea (Eliogabalo) at the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam, Giulietta (I Capuleti e I Montecchi) at the Bergen Opera, Hébé/Émilie/Zima (Les Indes galantes) at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, and Armida (Rinaldo) at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival.
