Katie Cruickshank

Biography

Canadian mezzo-soprano Katie Cruickshank has been singing since before she could speak, with a deep love and understanding of music from a young age. She completed her Bachelor of Music in Voice at the University of Ottawa under the tutelage of Christiane Riel and is currently completing her Masters of Music in Voice Performance, specializing in Early Music at McGill University in Montreal under the tutelage of Allyson McHardy. Katie was the recipient of multiple awards through her educational career including the Gaston Heon Undergraduate Musical scholarship, the Shelagh and David Williams Vocal Performance Scholarship, the Anna Maria Brancker Schubert Award and more. Katie has experience performing a wide variety of genres, including opera, art song, early music, contemporary music, as well as musical theatre. Since beginning her Masters degree, Katie has achieved many accomplishments, most recently as the alto soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria and Magnificat with the McGill Baroque Orchestra, performing the role of Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina with McGill Opera, as well as being selected to participate in the first ever Contemporary Opera Workshop at McGill taught by Canadian composer Luna Pearl Woolf. Additional operatic roles have included the Witch in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Hippolyta in Britten’s Midsummer Night's Dream and Secrecy in Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. Katie has a passion for ensemble singing, frequently collaborating with colleagues in Montreal, most recently performing works by Barbara Strozzi as part of the Early Music program at McGill University. In addition to her time on stage, Katie also contributes to the arts through her work as an arts administrator having worked for various arts organizations, most recently with the Canada Council for the Arts. Katie is looking forward to continuing to make and share music with those around her!
