Biography

British conductor Julia Jones will make her debut at the National Theatre in Prague in 2023 with Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.

A native of England, she studied conducting, piano, harpsichord and clarinet at the University of Bristol, as well as at London‘s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio.

She is a regular guest at the Royal Opera House in London, where she has conducted Mozart's Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte and Bizet's Carmen. She also maintains a close relationship with Oper Frankfurt, where she has acquired renown with the Mozart repertoire, as well as with Verdi‘s Falstaff and Berlioz‘s La damnation de Faust. She recently made her debut with Verdi‘s Aida at the Royal Swedish Opera and with Mozart‘s Idomeneo at the Royal Danish Opera, where she returned in 2022 to conduct Mozart‘s Don Giovanni. From 2016-2021, she served as General Music Director of the Wuppertaler Bühnen und Sinfonieorchester, where she conducted Humperdinck‘s Hänsel und Gretel, Carmen, Verdi‘s Luisa Miller, Le nozze di Figaro and Puccini‘s La bohème. From 1998-2002 she was chief conductor at Theater Basel, where her most successful productions included Verdi‘s La traviata and Otello, Wagner‘s Lohengrin, Strauss‘s Der Rosenkavalier and Tchaikovsky‘s Eugene Onegin. As chief conductor of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and of Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa in Lisbon (2008-2011), she has conducted Carmen, Janáček‘s Katya Kabanova and Strauss‘s Salome, among others, and a wide repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music. She has also guest conducted at the Berlin Staatsoper unter den Linden (e.g. Otello, La traviata, Le nozze di Figaro), the Wiener Staatsoper (Die Zauberflöte, Così fan tutte, La bohème), the Volksoper Wien (e.g. Don Giovanni, Janáček‘s The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, Johann Strauss‘s Die Fledermaus, Beethoven‘s Fidelio), at the Dresden Semperoper (Mozart‘s Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Idomeneo, Die Zauberflöte), at the Hamburg Staatsoper, Oper Köln, Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg (e.g. Wagner‘s Der fliegende Holländer, Britten‘s A Midsummer Night‘s Dream), Grand-Théâtre de Bordeaux (Bartók‘s Bluebeard‘s Castle, Puccini‘s Madama Butterfly), Seattle Opera, Norwegian Opera in Oslo, Bayerische Staatsoper, Welsh National Opera, Teatro Massimo Palermo, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Grand Théâtre in Geneva, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Opera Australia in Sydney and Melbourne, Canadian Opera Company in Toronto and Washington National Opera. She has also worked with a number of symphony orchestras such as Staatskapelle Dresden, Mozarteumsorchester Salzburg, Radiosinfonieorchester Wien, Dortmunder Philharmoniker and others.
