Jozef Kundlák

Biography

Permanent guest of the National Theatre Opera. Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, he studied at the Bratislava Conservatory. After finishing his studies, he participated in the Summer Opera Course of the European Opera Centre in Belgium, in 1984. From 1983, Jozef Kundlák has been a soloist at the Opera of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, with which he appeared in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. After the awards which he won in the A. Dvořák (1978) and M. Schneider-Trnavský (1981) competitions, in 1985 he won the Luciano Pavarotti Voice Competition in Philadelphia. Thanks to his pure and lucid tenor performance, Jozef Kundlák was invited to perform at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, in Genova, in Rome, in Florence, in Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, in Frankfurt, Berlin, Philadelphia, Vienna, etc. He has worked with many significant conductors, such as Bruno Bartoletti, Riccardo Muti, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Peter Schreier, among others. As a soloist of the Slovak National Theatre, he has played both at home and abroad in diverse lyrical roles – Mozart’s Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Verdi’s Alfredo (La traviata), Duca di Mantova (Rigoletto), Donizetti’s Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Bellini’s Elvino (La Sonnambulla), Dvořák‘s Prince (Rusalka) and others. Aside from his activity in the opera scene, he regularly performs on many concert stages in Europe and throughout the world. Update: January 2007
