Biography
Jana Malá was born in 1976 in Teplice. She studied dramatic art at the Prague Conservatory (1990- 96). While still a student, she appeared as a guest on a number of theatre stages, including the National Theatre (Doctor Fischer of Geneva), the theatres in Kladno (Steel Magnolias) and Pilsen (Painted on Glass), as well as at Prague Castle within the Shakespeare Festival (Macbeth). Between 1998 and 2002 she worked at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen, where she primarily appeared in operetta and musical roles: Girl or Boy (Ada Bártů), Kiss Me, Kate (Lois), Funny Girl (Funny Brice), Fiddler on the Roof (Cajtl), The Jackal Years (Milada), The Gypsy Camp Goes to the Heavens (Rada), Kristián (Adina) and others. Since 2002 she has been a member of Prague’s Divadlo na Vinohradech ensemble, where audiences have seen her in, for example, the productions The Full Monty! (Georgie), Tango solo (Laura), She Returned One Night (Dolly), The King Stag (Angela), The Journey of Charles IV to France (Beatrix), Lysistrata (Baukis) and in the triple role in the play Howard Katz. She appeared as a guest at the 41st Smetana Litomyšl international opera festival as Joan in Arthur Honneger’s oratorio Joan of Arc (conductor: Ondrej Lenárd). She has also performed at the Viola theatre, acting alongside Boris Rösner in the play Čtvrcení býčka (Quartering of a Bullock, 2001). Jana Malá has collaborated with the directors Antonín Procházka, Jiří Menzel, Miroslav Krobot, Gustav Skála, Radovan Lipus, Radek Balaš and others.
