Ildebrando D’Arcangelo

Biography

Born in Pescara, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo completed his studies in the same city under the guidance of M. V. Romano, and continued his training with Maestro P. Venturi. He won the ‘Toti dal Monte’ International Competition in Treviso in 1989 and 1991 and later made his operatic debut there in two operas by Mozart, Così fan tutte (Don Alfonso) and Don Giovanni (Masetto). The rich, dark quality of his voice, combined with great musicality and true dramatic instincts, soon brought him engagements in the most important theatres in Italy and abroad, under the baton of conductors such as Claudio Abbado, G. A. Gavazzeni, Myung-Whun Chung, Antonio Pappano, G. L. Gelmetti, Bernard Haitink, and the late Sir Georg Solti. He has recorded for Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, EMI, Sony Classical and Ricordi. He has sung in the Rome, Trieste, Venice, Bologna, and Genoa opera houses, at Ferrara Musica, at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, at the Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House, at the Opéra National Bastille, at the Chicago Lyric Opera House, at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, at the Salzburg Festival, at the Staatsoper in Bonn, at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, at the Susini Concerta and at the Sandwerin Concert House in Tokyo. He has affirmed himself in Mozart’s Don Giovanni (as Leporello and as the Don Giovanni), in Le nozze di Figaro as Figaro and as the Count, in Puccini’s La Bohème as Colline, as Rossini’s Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Alidoro in La Cenerentola and many others.
