After studying acting at DAMU in Prague, he was engaged at the Prague Municipal Theatres for eighteen years from 1964. He played a number of rewarding roles there, including Orestes (The Flies), Yossarian (Catch-22), Lot (Kingdom of God on Earth), Proteus (Two Gentlemen of Verona), the Robber (Painted on Glass), and Adamar (Hallelujah, Good People).
At the National Theatre Drama, where he has been a member since 1982, he began with the title roles in Shakespeare's Hamlet and Goethe's Faust.
