Madrid-born baritone David Oller makes his debut at the National Theatre in Prague in the title role of Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (2026).
He has developed a career spanning opera, zarzuela and the concert repertoire. He initially studied piano and composition before turning to singing, which he studied at the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid with Juan Lomba. He has been a finalist and prize-winner in competitions including the Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition and Salice D’Oro.
He was a member of the Opera Studio of L’Opéra national du Rhin, where he took part in productions and tours in Strasbourg, Colmar, Mulhouse and at L’Athénée in Paris. His concert work encompasses symphonic repertoire, Lied and recital, with a particular focus on Spanish and French traditions, including Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem and song cycles by Richard Strauss.
He has appeared at leading theatres and festivals including Teatro Real in Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Ópera de Oviedo, Theater Basel and MusikTheater an der Wien, as well as the Peralada, Rossini in Wildbad and Ticino Musica festivals. His operatic repertoire includes Così fan tutte, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Un ballo in maschera, Werther, Turandot, Rusalka, Gianni Schicchi, Il matrimonio segreto, Capriccio, Les mamelles de Tirésias and L’ heure espagnole, alongside contemporary works.
Zarzuela also occupies an important place in his career as part of his engagement with the Spanish lyrical repertoire. His association with Teatro de la Zarzuela began in 2016 with the premiere of María Moliner and has continued with works including Marina, Tabaré, I tre gobbi, El barberillo de Lavapiés, in which he sang the title role of Lamparilla, and, more recently, El gato montés, again in the title role. This work in Spanish repertoire also has an international dimension through his involvement with Los Paladines, the zarzuela company created by Christof Loy to promote the genre on international stages.
