Daniela Straková Šedrlová

Biography

Soprano, Daniela Straková Šedrlová, studied singing at the Brno Conservatory under the direction of Professor Anna Hanusová. She won second prize in 1988 at the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary. After finishing her studies at the Conservatory, she was engaged for a short time in opera studies with the National Theatre in Prague. She was then sent on a two-year residency to Italy, which as a result of her successful studies, was extended for another year. Thanks to the training she received in Italy, the home of ‘bel canto’ opera, her voice developed in lyricism and acquired a distinctive cantilena form. Since 1992 she has been a soloist of the Janáček Opera of the National Theatre Brno where she has performed a diverse range of roles including Mařenka (The Bartered Bride), Blaženka (The Secret), Vendulka (The Kiss), Violetta (La traviata), Norina (Don Pasquale), Mimì (La bohème), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Rusalka and The Foreign Princess (Rusalka), Elisabeth (Don Carlos), Margherita (Mefistofele), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), Clorinda (La Cenerentola), Mr. Brouček’s Housekeeper (The Excursions of Mr. Brouček to the Moon), The Countess (Le nozze di Figaro) and Liù (Turandot). She earned a nomination for the prestigious Thalia Award in 2013 for her portrayal of Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
