Biography

Daniel Špinar first studied acting at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU, 1998-2004), graduating with the role of Tim in Mark Ravenhill’s play Some Explicit Polaroids, for whose portrayal he received the Reflex prize for best performance at the Zlomvaz student festival. Subsequently, he went on to study stage direction at DAMU (2003-2008), graduating with a production of his own adaptation of F. M. Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov at the Disk Theatre.

While still a student, he attended several acting and directing workshops, including the summer course in Leacock’s acting method in Spain (2003) and an intensive course on the study and performance of Ancient drama in Epidaurus (2005).

After graduating, he worked for two seasons as stage director at the Vinohrady Theatre in Prague, where he created the production of Büchner’s Wozzeck (2009), which earned him the Alfréd Radok Award and the Josef Balvín Prize, and adapted Schiller’s Mary Stuart (2010).

Since that time, he has collaborated with many theatres in Prague and elsewhere as a freelance director, staging about 30 plays, e.g. Hedda Gabler and Hamlet at the Švanda Theatre in Prague, ValmontAnna Karenina and Cabaret Kafka (Josef Balvín Award) at the Reduta in Brno, The Marriage of Figaro and The Miser at the F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec, Britney Goes to HeavenTáňa-Táňa and My Romantic Story at the Petr Bezruč Theatre in Ostrava, The Salome Case, The Medea Case, The Maryša CaseDress Code: Amis and Amil and Icing at the A Studio in Prague, A Winter’s Tale, MasqueradeMorgiana and The Beggar’s Opera at the Klicpera Theatre in Hradec Králové, and PortugaliaThe SeagullBel Ami and Marie Antoinette for the Municipal Theatre in Kladno.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he was permanently engaged as a stage director. Since September 2015 he has been the Artistic Director of the National Theater Drama.
