Biography

Brazilian tenor Atalla Ayan makes his National Theatre Opera debut in 2022/23 season as (La traviata, State Opera production). He has to his credit a remarkable international career, having appeared at such major houses as the Royal Opera House, Opéra national de Paris, Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Bayerische Staatsoper, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Grand Théatre de Genève, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera Australia, San Francisco Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and many others. Atalla Ayan graduated from the Carlos Gomes Conservatoire in his native Belem. He sang his first major role at age 21, appearing as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi at the Theatro da Paz in Belem. He made his European debut one year later, appearing as Rodolfo (La bohème) at the Greek National Opera in Athens. His appearances at the Metropolitan Opera’s Summer Recital Concert Series in Central Park, Manhattan, and in Brooklyn Bridge Park, earned him an accolade from the New York Times critic who likened his voice to that of “the young Plácido Domingo.” He returned to the Met as Alfredo (La traviata), Christian (Cyrano de Bergerac) and Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi). In the 2022/2023 season, he sang his first Cavaradossi (Tosca) in Stuttgart and returns to Sydney as Rodolfo (La bohème) and as the Duke (Rigoletto). Atalla Ayan made his first appearance in Prague in the Nachtigall Artists concert series in October 2013, when he performed in the Smetana Hall together with Angela Gheorghiu.
