Biography
Swedish soprano Åsa Jäger was awarded the prestigious Operapriset in 2024 by Tidskriften Opera Magazine for her performance as Senta in Der fliegende Holländer at Göteborg Opera, voted by the magazine’s readers. Recent highlights include her role as Brünnhilde in Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre with Kent Nagano, the Dresdner Festspielorchester and Concerto Köln in The Wagner Cycles project at Dresdner Musikfestspiele and Lucerne Festival, receiving excellent reviews. The The Wagner Cycles project, running from 2023 to 2026, includes a Siegfried concert this season at major venues like State Opera in Prague, Philharmonie de Paris, and Lucerne Festival. Other engagements include performances with NDR Hamburg at Elbphilharmonie and her return to Landestheater Coburg as Senta. She also prepares for her debut in the title role of Tristan und Isolde in 2025/26. Past successes include her 2021/22 debut as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre at Landestheater Coburg, praised by critics for her clear tone and passionate portayal. In 2022/23, she continued her Ring Cycle debut, performing as Brünnhilde in Siegfried with great success. Jäger has also appeared in three premieres of contemporary operas, including Engström‘s Om människan (About Man) at Folkoperan in Stockholm. Renowned in Scandinavia, Åsa Jäger has worked with top conductors and orchestras such as The Royal Swedish Orchestra and Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. Jäger is also a passionate performer of Nordic art songs and German lieder, with wide repertoire in recital music. Known for her dark timbre, strong mid-range, and shimmering high notes, Jäger seeks total honesty in her stage presence, exploring the relationship between character, artist and psychology. Åsa Jäger’s upcoming roles include Lady Billows in Albert Herring, Mother in Hänsel und Gretel and the title roles in Turandot and Tristan und Isolde.
