Armen Hakobyan

Born in Armenia, Armen Hakobyan received his first ballet lessons in Yerevan before furthering his education at the Bulgarian Ballet School in Sofia. He won the first prize in the Bulgarian National Competition and became a finalist at the renowned International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. His first engagement was as a soloist with the Sofia State Opera Ballet.
In 2000 he became a member of the Theatre Altenburg-Gera where he danced in ballets by Uwe Scholz, Nils Christie, Ton Wiggers and Birgit Scherzer.
In 2003 he joined the German Opera on the Rhine Düsseldorf/Duisburg under the direction of Youri Vámos where he was cast as a soloist in a number of his ballets. During this time he also worked with many distinguished choreographers. He has also worked in Bulgaria, Korea and Germany as a teacher.
Since 2010/11 he has worked with the Aalto Ballet Theatre Essen and in the 2012/13 season he was promoted to soloist. He has performed the roles of Escamillo (“Carmen / Boléro”), as Moritz (“Max and Moritz”), as Demetrius (“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”), as Othello (“Othello”) as well as further solo parts in “Irish Soul”, “Rooster” (“Zeitblicke”) and others.
In the 2010/11 season he has also worked as a choreographer, creating the piece “Nuvole bianche” (“PTAH II”).
