Biography

Born in Lincolnshire, England, Andria Hall joined the London Festival Ballet (later known as English National Ballet) and rose rapidly through the ranks to become Principal Dancer in 1978. She performed most of the leading roles of the company including Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (both: Rudolf Nureyev), the title role in La Bayadere and Odette/Odile in Swan Lake (both: Natalia Makarova), Swanilda in Coppélia, the title role in Giselle, the Ballerina in Etudes and the title role in La Sylphide (all: Peter Schaufuss). She has also danced the female leading roles in several versions of The Nutcracker and Cinderella. She left London in January 1991 to take up the post of Ballet Mistress with the Ballet of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. From 1994 until 1997 she was deputy to the ballet director. Whilst in Berlin, she worked on several opera productions with Götz Friedrich and travelled to Finland, Sweden, Japan, and Israel in order to restage some of them. Since July 1997 she has been working as a freelance teacher and coach, principally with La Scala Milan, Staatsoper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Finnish National Ballet in Helsinki, and, in the UK, Northern Ballet and English National Ballet. She has also staged Peter Schaufuss’ production of La Sylphide at La Scala and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. At English National Ballet she revived Ronald Hynd’s production of Coppélia, Mary Skeaping’s production of Giselle, and was assistant to Michael Corder on his production of The Snow Queen. Since 2006 she has been a regular guest with the Stuttgart Ballet. During this time she has worked on most of the classical productions in the repertoire and has recently revived John Cranko’s Swan Lake and Peter Schaufuss’ production of La Sylphide. Since the 2018/19 season she has also worked as Principal Ballet Mistress and Artistic Advisor with the Stuttgart Ballet.
