The National Theater joins the Week for Ukraine

News

The National Theater is joining the event with a traveling exhibition entitled Memories of the Nation, dedicated to fallen Czech volunteers, which will be on display at Václav Havel Square from February 23, 2026.

Theatres and cultural institutions across the country are participating in the Week for Ukraine programme. The initiative includes charity performances, discussions about experiences in Ukraine and the impact of the war on Czech society, as well as an audio testimony by choreographer and director Yulia Lopata about war, everyday life and the irreplaceability of art in times of danger.

The National Theatre will also join in commemorating the fourth anniversary of the bombing of the theatre in Mariupol on March 16, 2022. The building was hit by the Russian air force, even though the word "ДЕТИ" (children) was written in large letters in front of and behind it. This inscription has become a symbol of the tragedy of Mariupol and the brutality of the attack on civilians who sought shelter in the theater.

On March 16, 2026, an inscription made of candles will be lit on the roof terrace of the historic National Theater building near the trigon as a silent reminder of this event and a gesture of solidarity with the victims of war.
