Modern technology and historical heritage go hand in hand: FLOWBOX at the State Opera
1/4/2025
The State Opera is becoming a pioneer in modern energy management in historic buildings. In collaboration with FLOWBOX, the implementation of the advanced FLOWBOX EMOS energy management system was successfully completed in March 2025. This project not only brings advanced energy management capabilities, but also increases operational efficiency and identifies potential savings.
Innovation for a historic building
The State Opera, one of the most important cultural institutions in the Czech Republic, is housed in a historic building that has recently undergone extensive renovation. In an effort to streamline operations, the FLOWBOX EMOS system was implemented, which connects the existing MaR system and enables detailed monitoring of electricity, gas, water, and heat consumption.
"Our goal was to gain a more detailed overview of energy flows, especially the production of heat and cooling at the sources and their consumption at individual consumption points within the State Opera complex, which is one of the theaters belonging to the National Theater. The installed FLOWBOX EMOS system allows us to monitor the development of heat and cooling production and energy and water consumption in more detail, in real time and retrospectively. This enables us to analyze this data and adjust the operating parameters of the technologies concerned on the basis of the data obtained. Last but not least, the FLOWBOX EMOS system provides a summary of the data necessary for energy reporting," said Jan Míka, Deputy Director of Technical and Operational Management at the National Theatre.
Advanced analytics and data visualization – the system automatically collects data and provides a detailed overview in a user-friendly interface.
● Streamlining the work of energy managers – eliminating manual meter reading and reducing administrative burdens.
● Identifying savings and optimizing consumption – FLOWBOX EMOS helps find hidden inefficiencies and anomalies in energy consumption.
● Automation of reporting – the system generates clear reports and control documents for billing heat and cooling to external customers.
● Increased efficiency of heat and cooling production – visualization of the operation of heat pumps and cooling machines allows analysis of their efficiency and possible readjustment of control in MaR.
● Carbon footprint calculation – FLOWBOX EMOS monitors CO₂ equivalent emissions and provides tools for evaluating the ecological footprint of operations.
Next steps and evaluation of results
The pilot operation of FLOWBOX EMOS at the State Opera will run until August 2025, when a comprehensive evaluation of the collected data and achieved savings will take place. "We are delighted to be involved in modernizing the State Opera's energy management and to show that innovative technologies can work effectively even in historic buildings. FLOWBOX EMOS will provide detailed consumption analysis and process automation, which will facilitate energy management and save time for opera staff," says Tomáš Rendla, CEO of FLOWBOX, about the project.
Why FLOWBOX
