Verdi’s La Traviata enjoys great popularity on the stage of the State Opera House. At the time of its origin, the audience was appalled that the lead role had been assigned to a courtesan. A bit of scandalousness is still apparent even in this production by Arnaud Bernard. Although this production appears to be black-and-white in costumes and decoration, it excels in variety of characters and affects its audience by the faith of the main protagonists.
