Natalia Kitamikado

Guest of the Opera

Costume designer Natalia Kitamikado is a designer whose practice ranges from products to scenography and costumes for opera, theatre, concerts and film. She studied object design at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris and industrial design at the Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw. She developed a deep interest in stage design thanks to collaboration with the renowned designer Boris Kudlička, with whom she worked on numerous productions, including of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Strauss’ Salome, Thomas Adès’ Powder Her Face (stage direction: M. Treliński), Strauss’ Elektra (stage direction: K. Warner) and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (stage direction: A. Miyamoto). Many of these productions have been staged internationally (Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Monnaie in Brussels, Polish National Opera, State Opera Prague, San Francisco Opera, Tokyo Bunkakaikan). Her first solo work was on a production of T. Williams’ Baby Doll (stage direction: Barbara Wiśniewska, Teatr Studio in Warsaw, 2015). She has collaborated with a number of directors, among them Tomasz Cyz (Penderecki’s The Bravest of Knights, Wrocław Opera), Jerzy Stuhr (Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Opera Krakow), Ewa Rucińska (Molière’s Tartuffe, Żeromski Theatre, Kielce, Poland) and Krystian Lada (Verdi’s Nabucco, Wrocław Opera).
