Soloist of the National Theatre Opera. Born in Prague, graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts where he studied with professors Teodor Šrubař and Karel Berman. He matured artistically at regional opera scenes in Liberec, Plzeň and Ostrava, where he created several significant bass parts from Czech and international repertoire. His professional experience was enriched by residencies in Bucharest, Weimar, Salzburg and Sienna. He has been a National Theatre soloist since 1988 but he had been a guest here more than ten years before. In the National Theatre he has among other roles studied Dvořák’s Water Sprite (Rusalka), Janáček’s Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen) and Jaroslav Prus (The Makropulos Case), key roles in operatic works of the composer Bedřich Smetana, The Old Man (Martinů: The Greek Passion), Mozart’s Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Sarastro and The Speaker (Die Zauberflöte), Don Alfonso (Cosi fan tutte) and the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Verdi’s Philip II. (Don Carlos), Guardiano (La forza del destino) and bass part in Verdi’s Requiem, Collin in Puccini’s La boheme, King Marke in Wagner‘s Tristan und Isolde, The Commissar in Strauss‘s Der Rosenkavalier, Gremin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Old Convict in Shostakovitch‘s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. He cooperated with many leading conductors, for example with Zdeněk Košler, Bohumil Gregor, Jiří Bělohlávek, Sir Charles Mackerras, Gerd Albrecht, Jiří Kout and others. With the National Theatre opera he performed at music festivals in Hong-Kong, Tokyo, Savonlinna and Germany. In 2001 he was invited by the Metropolitan Opera in New York to sing the role of Jaroslav Prus in The Makropulos Case. In his concert repertoire he concentrates on works by A. Dvořák, G. Verdi, J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, L. Beethoven, G. Rossini and B. Martinů. At present, he also teaches singing at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Update: February 2009
