Biography

John Bishop is an award-winning lighting designer who has created original lighting designs for more than 190 major productions including: The Great Gatsby (Dresden), A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Karlstad), Hänsel und Gretel (Frankfurt and Belfast); Le Roi Arthus, Tannhäuser (Strasbourg), Le nozze di Figaro (Warsaw); Der Ring des Nibelungen, Der fliegende Holländer (Oslo); Tristan und Isolde, Don Giovanni (Aarhus); Peter Grimes, Le Revenant (Madrid); Don Giovanni (São Paulo); A Chair in Love (Montreal & Swansea); Demon Juice (ROH, Covent Garden); Ernani (English National Opera); La traviata, West Side Story (Welsh National Opera); Albert Herring (Opera North & Tallinn); Vanessa, Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria (Royal Northern College of Music); La Gazzetta, Paul Bunyan, Eugene Onegin, Le Comte Ory, The Rake’s Progress, La bohème, The Knot Garden (Royal College of Music); Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Snow White, Peter and the Wolf, Carnival of the Animals (Kiev Classical Ballet); Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs (Ballet Cymru); Noddy and the Hidden Treasure (Lisbon); the rock opera Demones (Athens); The Woman in Black (Dubai); Brand, Red Fortress, The Vortex, The Private Room (London); numerous productions for Opera Zuid (Maastricht) and the Buxton Opera Festival. John also created the lighting designs for the world premieres of Hans Gefors’ opera Notorious in Göteborg and John Metcalf’s Under Milk Wood in Swansea. The production of Elektra in the Prague National Theatre in 2016 was John’s tenth production with Keith Warner.
