Biography

The Dutch tenor Arnold Bezuyen launched his professional career in Augsburg and Bremen, performing the roles of Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Rodolfo (La bohéme), Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana), the Singer (Der Rosenkavalier), Cassio (Otello), Ismaele (Nabucco), Alfredo (La traviata) and, most notably, Loge (Das Rheingold). In 1998, he debuted as Loge, his flagship role, in Bayreuth, under the baton of James Levin, and also portrayed the character at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, conducted by Gustav Kuhn (the performance was recorded live). In 2011, he debuted as Loge at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, under Fabio Luisi. In 2001, he gave his first performance as Narraboth (Salome) at the Wiener Staatsoper. He has also appeared to great acclaim as David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) at Covent Garden in London, Prince Shuysky (Boris Godunov) at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Jimmy Mahoney (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny) in Bari, and Matteo (Arabella) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Arnold Bezuyen has also performed at Milan’s La Scala, in Amsterdam, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Kassel, Stuttgart, Palermo, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Valencia. His repertoire includes several Czech opera roles: he has portrayed Števa (Jenůfa) at the Staatsoper Hamburg, Albert Gregor (The Makropulos Case) in Innsbruck, Matěj Brouček (The Excursions of Mr. Brouček) in Frankfurt, and Boris (Katya Kabanova) in Lisbon. In the 2014/15 season, he also sang the latter two roles at the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava. Besides appearing in operas, Arnold Bezuyen has also pursued concert activities, with his extensive repertoire ranging from Mozart’s and Verdi’s Requiem to 21st-century music.
