Wijnand van der Horst

Biography

The Dutch lighting designer Wijnand van der Horst graduated in 1996 in Theatre Electronics and Technology. He subsequently started to work as a lighting technician in theatre and the entertainment industry, participating in various kinds of productions. In 2004, he began designing lighting for opera, ballet and drama productions, as well as events, exhibitions, light art and architectural lighting.

Within the process of creation he always starts with a dialogue between all the given aspects and partners. While empathy is the key in the collaborative context, he uses form, direction, rhythm and colour to design. When it comes to dramaturgy, he strives to establish a link between himself as a designer and the essence of the work. He likes to seek creative solutions and to turn his own vision into visual imagery that finally leads into a practical lighting design.

He has made lighting designs for the Dutch National Opera, the Dutch National Ballet, the House of Makers, and worked with Juanjo Arques, Peter Leung, Shen Wei and many other choreographers.
