Biography
Associate Director
He was born in Aix-en-Provence and studied in Paris, first film then theatre. His interest in the relationship between music and the visual aspects of theatre brought him to the field of opera production; in 1988 he began working as assistant director at the Paris Opera. He has worked with many directors including Peter Sellars (St. François d´Assise), Jorge Lavelli (Gounod´s Faust and Handel´s Ariodante) and Lev Dodin (Tchaikovski´s The Queen of Spades). In 1991, he worked with Robert Wilson on the produciton of Die Zauberflöte, which marked the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Mozart´s death. This production brought him other opportunities of working a series of projects for the Paris Opera with Robert Wilson: Puccini´s Madama Butterfly in 1993, Debussy´s Pelléus et Mélisanda in 1997, and Strauss´ Die Fraue ohne Schatten in 2002. Since 1999, he has worked as associate director with Robert Wilson. He was one of the creators of the production of Prometheus in Athens (with music by Iannis Xenakis) in 2001, and in 2002 Janáček´s Osud for the National Theatre in Prague and Verdi´s Aida in the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. He was also a member of the creative teams for productions: at the Covent Garden Opera in London in 2003 and the Teatro dell´Opera in Rome in 2009, the stage adaptation of The Fables of La Fontaine for La Comédie Française (2004) and New York (2007), the production of Wagner´s Ring cycle in 2005 and 2006 for the Théâtre du Châtelet, J.S. Bach´s Saint John´s Passion for the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Vilnius Festival in 2007, and Gounod´s Faust in Warsaw in 2008. Since 2002, he has been working with director Jean-Paul Scarpitta, with whom he has staged such operas: as Zoltán Kodály´s Háry János in 2002 in Montpellier and at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 2004, Hindemiths´ Sancta Susanna in 2003 in Montpellier, Arthur Honneger´s dramatic oratorium entitled Jeanne d´Arc au bucher in 2005 for Le Festival Radio France and Montpellier Laguedoc-Roussillon, Mozart´s Don Giovanni in 2007, and Bartók´s one-act opera Bluebeard´s Castle in 2009.
