Biography

Ivo Žídek was born in 1948 in Ostrava. He studied set design at Prague’s Academy of Performing Arts with Prof. František Tröster (1968-70) and later attended the Academy of Applied Arts, where he studied architecture with Prof. Josef Svoboda (1971-74). He subsequently worked both within permanent engagements and as a freelance set designer. The beginnings of his professional career are linked with the Ústí nad Labem Theatre (1979-84) and the local Drama Studio. From 1990 to 1994 he was a set designer at Prague’s National Theatre, creating sets for, among other productions, Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya (1990), Hilbert’s Falkenštejn (1992), Goldoni’s Mirandolina (1992), Ibsen’s The Wild Duck (1993) and Janáček’s opera The Makropulos Affair (1993). As a guest artist, he designed sets for Smetana’s opera Libuše (1995). Within the private production of the Musical company he designed sets for the first Czech staging of Webber and Rice’s musical Evita (1998). He has also collaborated over the long term with the Karlín Music Theatre, where he has created sets for a number of musicals and operettas. With the director Petr Novotný he staged, for example, Peter Stone’s musical Some Like It Hot (1986, 1997), Loewe’s My Fair Lady (1995), Herman’s Hello, Dolly! (1997), Kander’s musicals Zorba (1999), Chicago (2002) and Singing in the Rain (2001), Petr Markov and Jindřich Brabec’s Zvonokosy (2001). With the director Rupert Dubský he staged Herman’s musical La Cage aux Folles (1998) and Mancini’s Victor/Victoria (2000). Furthermore, he has designed sets for the swing musicals Snowy Romance (1994) and New York Dreams (1997). With his brother, the director Libor Žídek, he co-staged Lehár’s operetta The Merry Widow (1996) and Friml’s Rose Marie (1999), and with Petr Kracik Lehár’s The Land of Smiles (2000). Update: 2000
