

Hagen Matzeit
Biography
Hagen Matzeit studied singing in Berlin and took part in directing courses with Ruth Berghaus, Peter Konwitschny and Harry Kupfer. He received a scholarship from the Komische Oper Berlin, where he has been a regular guest since then. He has also sung at the opera houses of Dresden, Bratislava, Brussels, Buenos Aires, Paris, Toulouse and Oslo and at festivals such as the Hollandfestival Amsterdam, Händelfestspiele Halle and Karlsruhe, Ruhrtriennale, Bregenz Festival, Arts Music Bruxelles, Melbourne Australia International Festival, to name but a few. His repertoire spans stylistic periods from early to contemporary music. He sang the title role in Handel’s Admeto at the Leipzig Opera and the leading role of Aymar in the world premiere of Oscar Bianchi’s Thanks to my Eyes at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Other engagements include the roles of Herold in Reimann’s Medea at the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, Elviro (Handel: Serse) at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Licisco (Giacomelli: Merope) at the Theater an der Wien, the leading role for countertenor in the world premiere of The Red Death by Francesco Filidei under Sylvain Cambreling at the Donaueschinger Musiktage, in the Cologne Philharmonie and in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, his debut at the Bavarian State Opera Munich in the leading role of Axel Freund in Bluthaus by Georg Friedrich Haas as part of the Ja Mai festival and the role of Lentulo in Graun’s Silla at the Tage der Alten Musik Innsbruck. In 2023/24, the role of O in the world premiere of the opera INES by Ondřej Adámek at the Cologne Opera, the role of Mary Sunshine in Chicago by John Kander and repeatedly The Public Opinion in Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers at the Komische Oper Berlin were on his agenda.
