BiographyWhile still a student of New York's Julliard School of Music this American baritone made his debut at Avery Fischer Hall in New York's Lincoln Center in Refice's "Cecilia", with Renata Scotto. He burst upon the international scene in 1977, when as a Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist, he was engaged for the Spoleto festival U.S. production of Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades opposite Magda Olivero, and the new production of Menotti's The Consul. Shortly after, he made his Carnegie Hall debut and soon appeared in the leading U.S. opera houses such as the San Francisco Opera, the Cincinatti Opera, the New York City Opera, and the Baltimore Opera. In 1981 he made his European debut and soon appeared in the most prestigious Italian theatres: Parma, Pesaro, Trieste, Roma, Naples. He has performed on most prestigious world opera stages – Teatro all Scala in Milano, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Wiener Staatsoper, Opernhaus Zurich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Opéra National de Paris (Bastille), L’Opéra in Paris, Opéra de Nantes, Opernhaus Zurich, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, De Vlaamse Oper in Antwerp and Gent, New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv. He concerted with Verdi’s Requiem in Lisbon and at a tour of Japan, with Mozart’s Requiem in Lille, with Prokofiev’s Maddalena in Paris and with Rossini’s Messa di Gloria in Musikverein in Vienna. His repertoire includes most roles of his baritone domain, at random: Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Escamillio in Carmen, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, further operas include Atilla, Alceste, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Romeo and Juliet, Adelia, Lucia di Lammermoor, Turandot, Eugen Onegin and many others. Boris Martinovich has cooperated with many leading world artists, i.e. Samuel Ramey and Shirley Verrett, conductors Claudio Abbado and Maestro Casadesus; Monserrat Caballe, Placido Domingo and many others. He has made numerous recordings and his Sony Classical Label of Prince Ivor was awarded the Grand Prix Academie Charles Cros in the Opera category. Recently, he recorded Il Guarany for Sony Classical with Placido Domingo under the baton of John Nesching and produced a recording of cantata Clovis et Clotilde with Monserrat Caballe and also a Les Huguentos CD, both for Erato. His latest CD recording of Don Giovanni was awarded the Prix Gabriel Dussurgt-Orphee. In 1997 he gave a Gala concert with Placido Domingo and Svetla Vassileva in Croatian Split for more than 50 000 people where he participated not only as a performer but also as the artistic director of the concert. Recently he has sung Carmen with Agnes Baltza in Mannheim and with this performance he will debut in Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and consecutively he will perform as Escamillio in Sao Paolo, Brazil. His upcoming performances include world concert tour with Goran Filipec and a new Don Giovanni production lead by Pier Luigi Pizzi in Seville, Venice, Croatia and Portugal. This is his first guest performance in the National Theatre Opera.
